The Kentucky Derby: Sports or Fashion?in Fashion
What does one find so intriguing about the Kentucky Derby? Is it the thrill of a two minute thoroughbred race, or perhaps, is it the eye catching spring fashions? Regardless of personal preference, the Kentucky Derby is certainly set apart from other sporting and/or entertainment events of its class because of the attention evoking hats.
Because of Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. (founder of the Kentucky Derby), the American racetrack has evolved into a fashion haven for Derby attendees. Since 1875, the Kentucky Derby has been identified as both a sporting and fashion event. The Kentucky Derby is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May.
There are some questions regarding the order in which attire and accessories should be selected for the esteemed event. While some argue the outfit should be chosen first with the intent to match the hat to the outfit, others counter that by emphasizing the Kentucky Derby is about the hat. As a result, the hat should be at the forefront of the agenda with the outfit being the accessory to the hat.
Rules do not exist in regard to fashion picks for those fortunate enough to attend the Kentucky Derby. This event is an opportunity for both men and women to showcase their unique creativity and style combinations. The fashion for women attending the Kentucky Derby has changed over the years. Hats, gloves, suits, frilly sun dresses, and even parasols have all been (and still are) wardrobe staples of women attending the Kentucky Derby.
If planning on attending the 2016 Kentucky Derby or a local Kentucky Derby Party in your area, your fashion selections will most be influenced by where you will be sitting (e.g., reserved seating such as a suite). It is never too early to begin visualizing your Derby attire. With that being said, will you be Derby ready for May 7, 2016?
