A man who has seen the highs and lows of fame – Robert Downey Jr. A search of his name brings up ‘Iron Man’ and a number of things that have darkened his past. He is truly a Phoenix risen from its ashes, like many of the roles that he’s played. The one that comes clearly to mind is Tony Stark. But this article isn’t a recollection of everything that has gone wrong in the star’s life. There is enough negativity out there. Let’s take this moment to appreciate the amazing man that he is.

As a son of a filmmaker and actor, he was born into the films. His mother, the actor, Elsie Ann Ford, instilled a deep love for performing in her son. His first role was in the absurdist comedy, Pound, when he was just six years old. But he didn’t look back from there. His roles grew and his aura in the industry started to grow as well. He has some roots of classical ballet which he learnt in England and he even studied at a Performing Arts school.

At the age of 16, he moved to New York to pursue career as an actor full time. During that time, he lived with Kiefer Sutherland as roommates. He built himself as a theatre artist for a while before bagging a role in SNL, and meanwhile he entered the big screen besides James Spader in Tuff Turf. The same James Spader who recently voiced Ultron, Tony Stark’s creation and the Big Bad in the movie. The movie, Less Than Zero, drove Downey into the arena of big-budget films like Chances Are.

In 1992, he got nominated for an Oscar for his role in the movie Chaplin. Subsequently, he appeared in a number of films like The Last Party and Two Girls and A Guy. His real rise to success, though, came in around the year 2008 when he starred in the movie, Iron Man. This is where he turned himself around from a critically acclaimed star to a box office sensation. In the same year, he seized another nomination at the Oscars with his risky role in Tropic Thunder.

Robert Downey Jr. is the true definition of an inspiration. He is a genius, millionaire, monogamous, philanthropist. Married for more than ten years, he has three children; two boys and one girl. As the fans have loved his comeback and appreciated his roles, he has not strayed away from paying back. From delivering a little boy an Iron Man prosthetic arm to celebrating his birthday among child fans to posting a silly picture and extending a warm invitation to the Civil War premiere, this man has won the hearts of children and adults alike.

Rounding up, he put it the best way: "I'm just this guy who has a really strong sense of wanting home and wanting foundation and having not had it, I now choose to create it."
